A golden colored grape, it is best known to be grown in France and Australia. Once among the most widely planted grapes in the world, production is declined and is now primarily used as a blending grape in Bordeaux. It is also used in dessert wines such as Sauternes.
In Australia it is made into a wine where the grape stands on it’s own. Best expressed in Hunter Valley Australia, where it is a dry white wine with honeyed notes with citrus notes of green apple, lemon and lime. Certain vintages are highly sought after and can age well for a very long time.
When made right, Semillon can me a complex, rich and delicious wine. However when not done right, it can be a bland wine with little or no complexity.
