Thought to be a mutant of Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris is actually a bluish colored grape. Also called Pinot Grigio. Colors of the wine can range from deep golden yellow, to pale almost clear wine to even a wine with a pink hue.
Grown all over the world, it is typically grown in two styles. The Italian style is high acidity, crisp finish with citrus notes. The Alsatian style which is also practiced in new world places such as California, tends to be fuller bodied, spicy with a more oily texture and deeper tropical fruit notes.
