Also known as Primitivo in Italy. Zinfandel has been found to originate in Croatia as Crljenak it made it’s way to Apulia in Italy and was known as Primitivo. Sometime during the mid-nineteenth century, the grape found itself in California and took on the name Zinfandel. The Californians never looked back. Zinfandel is now known as a grape that is truly American. About 10 percent of all the vineyards in California grow this grape.
Zinfandel is a robust red wine that takes on notes of raspberries and other red fruits when grown in cool areas. In warmer areas, Zinfandel will show blackberry, anise and pepper notes.
Zinfandel is also extensively made in a semi-sweet blush wine that is called White Zinfandel.
