Grown primarily in Spain, Tempranillo is a black, tannic grape that is widely grown particularly in Northern Spain. Tempranillo is most popularly known to be the primary grape in Rioja. Not as powerfully flavored as other popular red wines, Tempranillo is typically aged in oak barrels for extensive periods so the wine will take on the oak characteristics. Flavors that evolve are typically plum and strawberry. Tempranillo is also one of several grapes often used in the production of Port.
