Rhone blends are named this because many of the worlds red blends imitate the grape blends of the Rhone Valley in France. Grapes such as Syrah, Mourvedre, Grenache, Cinsault and several other can blend wonderfully. Some will use names such as GSM (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre) or use a proprietary name. They typically create a spicy, full wine with notes of cherry and black fruits.
Blends are popular among vintners because they believe that the sum of the parts can produce a superior wine compared to unblended wines. Also it can minimize risks in troubling growing seasons.
