Grown nearly exclusively in Italy, Nebbiolo is the primary grape used in several of Italy’s Piedmontese “Icon” wines Barolo and Barberesco. It is also used in slightly more modest wines such as Gattinara and Ghemme and simply Langhe.
Typically a light red color, the wine made from this grape is very tannic in it’s youth with notes of tar and flowers. As it ages a brickish orange color will start to show. The flavors that evolve can be an amazing mix of tar, flowers, plum, herbs, truffles, tobacco and cherries. Most Nebbiolo wines you will want to age to soften the tannins and let the secondary flavors start to show.
