Not to be confused with Petite Sirah.  Syrah is also called Shiraz.  Syrah is a dark colored grape that is very widely grown throughout the wine world.  Depending on where it is grown, it readily takes on characteristics of the region.  In moderate climates, primarily Northern Rhone and Washington state, the grapes will be medium bodied with aromas of blackberry, mint and white pepper.  In hot areas such as Australia, where it is primarily called Shiraz, the grape gives aromas of jammy dark fruit, leather, and anise.  The hot region will typically produce softer tannins also.

Syrah is also prominent in blending with several other grapes.  Being so versatile and the ability to be grown in a wide range of areas, Syrah is truly an international varietal being grown nearly everywhere to some extent.
