Pinot Noir

The name is derived from the French words “pine” and “black”, probably referring to the pine cone shaped grape clusters.  The spiritual home for Pinot Noir has long been Burgundy, with some of the finest examples of wine coming from there.  Other regions that have grown fine reputations for growning this grape are Oregon, Russian River Valley and Carneros California, Otago and Marlborough regions of New Zealand.  Pinot Noir is also a primary component in Champagne and other sparkling wines throughout the world.  There are other regions that are certainly deserving.

Grown in cooler regions, this grape is widely considered able to produce some of the very finest wines in the world.  Although difficult to grow, vintners are seduced by this grape because of it’s enormous potential when done right.  When young, the wines have light tannins and bright fruit flavors of strawberries, raspberries and cherries.  With age the wine will develop notes of cedar, earth and barnyard notes that can add beautiful complexity to the wine.
