Carmenere was once prominent in France as one of the original grapes used in blending Bordeaux.  After Phylloxera hit France, it was wiped out of Europe and currently is almost impossible to find in France.

Thought to be extinct, it was found that Chilean farmers were inadvertantly preserving Carmenere for the past 150 years.  they thought they were growing Merlot!  Now Chile has taken the grape as it’s own has has been rapidly increasing production, marketing and experimentation.  Carmenere has been known as a distinct variety only since 1998.
