South African Wines

South Africa actually has a long history of winemaking dating back to the 1600’s.  However, until recently, it has been relatively unknown here in the U.S. becaus of trade restrictions because of apartheid.  South Africa has long been known for a grape called Pinotage.  In the past, this wine has often been harsh, astringent and had an odor of rubber.  Lately though, modern winemakers have got their hands on it and are starting to make consistently good ull bodied bright wines even at the lower price point.  Stellenbosch is arguably the best region for wines in South Africa.  Stellenbosch is making truly world class Syrah and Cabernat as well as wonderful Sauvignon Blancs and Chenin Blanc.  I would say that their whites can rival some of the Loire Valleys best!  Other regions that make stellar wines are Cape Town, Durban and Paarl.  If you’ve never had wines from South Africa or haven’t in several years, they are definitely worth revisiting.
